Strong summer films lift Marcus profits to pre-recession heights

Marcus Corp. said Thursday that it had its best-performing quarter since before the 2008 recession because of strong run of summer movies and an ongoing rebound in the hospitality industry.

Milwaukee-based Marcus (NYSE: MCS), which runs a chain of movie theaters and operates and manages hotels and resorts, reported that fiscal first-quarter profits jumped 26 percent to $13.4 million, or 50 cents per share, compared with $10.7 million, or 37 cents per share, for the same period a year ago.
